DMRC opens Metro Adventure Club

New Delhi: Delhi Metro Rail Corporation on Saturday launched a Metro Adventure Club to promote adventure and sports activities among its over 8,500 employees. The adventure club was launched by taking out a ‘Heritage Walk' from Chawri Bazar Metro station that holds the distinction of being the deepest Metro station of Delhi Metro network.Located in the old city, Chawri Bazar Metro station is also known as ‘Time Machine’ station because the swanky Metro station below the surface, complete with escalators, lifts, air-conditioning and all major amenities, is in an area that is marked by centuries old buildings and densely packed streets.

The Heritage Walk organised in association with Delhi Walks was flagged off by DMRC managing director Dr Mangu Singh who also joined it. The Walk covered historical landmarks including Jama Masjid, Red Fort, Gauri Shankar Mandir, Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib and the famous Paranthe Wali Gali. The Delhi Metro Adventure Club will organise a visit of Yamunotri and Gangotri next month.

Two persons were arrested held with 400 kg cannabis

Visakhapatnam : Two persons were arrested today for allegedly possessing around 400 kg of cannabis, police said. Acting on a tip-off, a raid was conducted and the accused Bhashankar Roy (58) and Viswanadh Roy (52), both residents of Patna, were nabbed from Aradagudem area in the district, Pedabayalu police station sub-inspector T Malleswara Rao said. The seized contraband is worth Rs 12 lakh in international market, the officer said, adding a car, two mobiles and cash worth Rs 53,570 were also recovered from their possession. A case under relevant sections of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act has been registered, police said.

Spice Jet joins low fare race

New Delhi:Budget carrier SpiceJet today joined the low-fare race in the domestic market putting on the block half-a-million seats with ticket prices starting at Rs 1,499, days after the government gave a go-ahead to its revival plan under the new promoters.

The bookings under the three-day "Super Sale" offer can be made from today for a travel period between February 15 to June 30, SpiceJet said in a release. The offer comes close on the heels of other airlines -- AirAsia India, Jet Airways, Air India and IndiGo -- rolling out similar schemes amid low travel demand season.

March and September quarters of the fiscal are traditionally lean seasons for the airlines in the country, and they woo customers with low fares to fill the empty seats.

"We are excited to offer our first signature promotion for 2015 to incentivise customers. Such Super Sale offers are meant to sell in advance at attractive prices seats that would otherwise be expected to go empty, thereby improving revenues," SpiceJet Chief Commercial Officer Kaneswaran Avili said.

A quick glance at the seat factor, according to a recent DGCA data, suggests that domestic carriers had almost 10 per cent higher occupancy in their planes in the December quarter of 2014 as compared to the March quarter of that year.

 Minor girl raped by private tutor

Nagpur:A private tutor allegedly repeatedly raped a 13-year-old daughter of his landlord in the city, police said today. The accused identified as Akshay Nagulkar was arrested yesterday, following a complaint lodged by the minor.

"The accused had taken a room on rent at the victim's house in Mangalwari area in northern part of the city in April last year to run coaching classes. In May last year, he first sexually assaulted the girl and thereafter raped her several times threatening her of dire consequences," a statement issued by police said.

The victim went into depression and stopped going to school due to the repeated sexual abuse. The crime came to light after her class teacher went to her place yesterday to enquire with her family about why she had stopped attending classes since the past one month.

The girl narrated her ordeal, following which a complaint was lodged against Nagulkar and he was arrested. Medical tests conducted on the victim confirmed rape.

The accused has been booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including 376 (rape) and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (Pocso).

Jan : One person succumbed to swine flu at a hospital here, raising the death toll to 28 in Rajasthan in the new year so far. 24-yar-old Vinod of Sanganer sub-urban town here, died of the disease at the SMS hospital this morning, a senior government official said, adding, he was admitted to the hospital yesterday in critical condition. 123 more patients were tested positive for the disease, he said.

Meanwhile, Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje who held a high level review meeting of medical officials and experts here, directed that every patient recommended by a doctor in the government-run hospital to be tested for H1N1, should be tested for the same free of cost. Similarly, any patient demanding swine flu test, should be given fifty per cent rebate at the government-run hospitals, Raje said. The chief minister asked the MHD to conduct a mass awareness programme in the entire state so that there should be no doubt on the treatment and prevention of the disease.

Asking medical officers to explore possibility of opening swine flu test centres at private hospitals, Raje said, the state government would seek more testing kits for H1N1 diagnosis from the Centre. Raje also expressed serious concern on the death of two patients who died from Crimean-CONGO fever (Congo Hemorrhagic fever) in a private hospital of Jodhpur, and two others who were undergoing treatments. She directed this disease be taken up on priority so that preventive care be provided to suspected patients.

Speaking on the occasion, Medical and Health Minister R S Rathor apprised that his department was regularly monitoring the cases at the state level and taking no chance to provide medical care to such patients.

Of the 28 deaths due to swine flu in Rajasthan since January 1, ten persons were from Jaipur, three each from Nagaur and Jodhpur, two each from Tonk, Banswara, Kota, Barmer, and one each from Dausa, Bundi, Ajmer, and Bikaner. The figure includes 14 females and 13 males, according to the statistics available with the MHD.

Sixteen patients died in state-run hospitals, while 12 in private hospitals, the official said. The dreaded disease afflicted and proved fatal in the age group of 26 to 50 years as 18 out of 27 deaths were in this age group.

A 10-year-old boy of Nagaur also succumbed to the disease at a hospital here early this week.

In a statement, former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot demanded the BJP government to provide quick treatment and diagnostic facilities to patients so that their lives be saved in time. Gehlot also urged the government to launch a widespread awareness programme on all dreaded diseases.

The incident came to light this afternoon when the car was parked for a while in Kandhaikheda village following which the police broke its window and pulled Manoj out, who was dead by then, police spokesperson said. Gujarat :  170 cases reported Ahmedabad Swine flu has claimed 22 lives in Gujarat this month, while the total number of cases has scaled up to 170 across the state, officials said today. "The death-toll due to Swine flu reached 22 today, while the total number of H1N1 cases has scaled up to 170 in the entire state,Health Commissioner of Gujarat J P Gupta said.

Kutch district is the worst affected, where around 81 cases, including five deaths, have been reported, while Jamnagar has registered 12 cases including five deaths, he said.

Cases were also reported in major cities like Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat and Rajkot, Gupta said. According to him, the state health department today held a video conference with around 300 doctors to make them aware about the swine flu. "We held a video conference with around 300 private doctors across the state. We asked them to follow proper protocol and get involved in the state's relief work.

We told them to follow early and proper diagnosis," Gupta said. Since the swine flu virus spreads through the air, so the state health department is trying to make people aware about avoiding public places.

Obama, who wound up his three-day visit here, said he had discussed with Prime Minister Narendra Modi how a better job could be done to deal with the pandemics. "The public health infrastructure around the world needs to be improved," the US president said in a joint radio address with Modi in the special episode of 'Mann Ki Baat' programme.

"The Prime Minister (Modi) and I have discussed for example, how we can do a better job in dealing with issues like pandemic and making sure that we have good alert systems so that if a disease like Ebola, or a deadly flu virus, or Polio appears, it is detected quickly and then treated quickly so that it doesn’t spread," he added.

He patted the back of Modi for "doing a great job in focusing on these issues" in India. "India has a lot to teach many other countries who may not be advancing as rapidly in improving this public health sector," he said, adding "...we think that there is a lot of progress to be made here and I am very excited about the possibilities of considering this work even after I leave office.

" Ebola is an infectious and generally fatal disease marked by fever and severe internal bleeding and is spread through contact with infected body fluids by a filovirus (Ebola virus), whose normal host species is unknown. The worst outbreak of the virus in history has seen nearly 9,000 deaths in a year -- mostly in three west African countries of Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone and has sparked a major health scare worldwide.

New Delhi : Congress MP Shashi Tharoor may be questioned again in connection with his wife Sunanda Pushkar's mysterious death, Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi today said. Tharoor has already been examined by the SIT once. He was questioned by police on January 19 for around four hours at the office of Anti Auto Theft Squad (AATS) in South Delhi's Vasant Vihar. "SIT is continuously probing the case. Whatever is necessary, they have been doing and I am sure that if they require to question anyone again, they will be doing that and they will be doing that soon," Bassi told reporters here when asked when would Tharoor be questioned again.

Sources said that SIT is likely to question the former Union minister this week as they got very "little time" with him on January 19. They also said that as he was the "closest relative" of the deceased at the spot when she was found dead, he may be questioned several times as the SIT would want to ask him about the things which would arise during examination of other witnesses and people concerned. 52-year-old Sunanda was found dead in a room in the hotel on January 17 last year.

Delhi Police filed a case of murder in the case on January 1 and an SIT was formed to probe the case. Since then, police has questioned a number of people in this connection including domestic aides of Tharoor, staff of the hotel where Sunanda was found dead, family friend Sanjay Dewan and the hotel doctor who pronounced her dead.

Recently, it has also recorded the statements of several journalists in this regard with whom Sunanda had spoken a day before her death to find out whether she had mentioned to them about the IPL controversy, her husband Tharoor's alleged relations with Pakistani journalist Mehr Tarar or about any plans of hers to hold a press conference.

Journalist Nalini Singh had on Friday told the SIT that she had spoken to Sunanda about taking the blame for her husband in the IPL controversy following which police decided to rope in the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) to examine the business model of the erstwhile IPL Kochi franchise and to understand the controversy surrounding it. The investigators are now examining whether the IPL controversy had anything to do with Sunanda's death.

Cartoonist R K Laxman passed away

Pune : Eminent cartoonist R K Laxman, who immortalised the hapless 'Common Man' with his devastating swipes at politicians but without malice, died here today at a private hospital at the age of 94 after suffering multi-organ failure. "Laxman passed away at 6.50 PM," Dr Sameer Jog of Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital, said.

Creator of ubiquitous mute spectator 'Common Man', Laxman was admitted to the hospital on January 17 for urinary infection. He suffered multi-organ failure and was put on ventilator. Laxman, brother of late novelist R.K. Narayan, is survived by writer wife Kamala, retired journalist son Srinivas and daughter-in-law Usha. His legendary spell on the Indian newspaper reader was cast after joining the Times Of India (TOI).

His front page pocket cartoon "You said it" started in 1951, unleashing his iconic "common man", a silent witness to the shenanigans of politicians who were supposed to realise his dreams, hopes and aspirations but betrayed him on most occasions. His association with TOI continued through the six decades even as he got back to work after recovering from a paralytic stroke in 2003 that incapacitated his left side.

A Padma Vibhushan, Laxman also won the Magsaysay award in 1984 for journalism, literature and creative communication arts. Condoling his demise, noted cartoonists described him as outstanding, towering figure who always had his finger on the pulse of the nation

The Ministry has also sought a clarification from the vice chancellor about the preparation made to launch Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) by the end of this month. The online courses will be open and accessible worldwide and will be provided free of cost.

The first MOOC course is expected to start this month-end in a series called 'India in the 21st century'. It comprises a series of lectures delivered by the VC himself. Dinesh Singh has been at the centre of controversy ever since the row over the four year undergraduate programme (FYUP) broke out, with HRD ministry directing him to roll back the programme in June last year as it had no approval from the President who is the Visitor to Central universities.

The HRD ministry had also forwarded the President a letter written by CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury highlighting alleged irregularities by the VC in the varsity's functioning.

In his letter, Yechury has also mentioned about a 'white paper' released by Delhi University Teachers Association (DUTA) alleging grave illegalities, academic erosion and administrative breakdown due to abuse of office by the VC.
